Home Away from Home  2012

Acid-free 110gsm archival paper

100 x 10cm

"Home away from home" is about my experiences as a Malaysian Chinese immigrant living in the Kimberley, Western Australia. Living in two different world at the same time, had taught me to appreciate the sense of belonging, transforming, to reminiscence old memories and make new ones, to leave behind past prejudices and embrace kindness and acceptance from human kind.

This work is a passage to a world intertwining East and West, “home” and “home away from home”, where the colours (new home) interpolates with previous habitation. I have been very fortunate to be working with a group of indigenous artists for the past 10 years and they have taught me through their stories of ‘belonging’ and yearning for ‘home’. They speak of going ‘home – back to country’ and perhaps we share similar language of interpretation in this piece.
