Historically, the Chinese calendar was used to note dates and times, and guide agricultural activities. Now, it is a mass produced and economically printed pages that are packed with knowledge for entertainment value to attract sales. I barely scratch the surface of knowledge in this ancient system. While I traverse between old and new information, making sense and finding meaning in the language, taboo, rituals and time within a social construct that I am still largely a part of; my identity formation and evolution are impacted by a variety of internal and external factors. Weaving the narratives between logical or illogical, fate and destiny, all these beliefs are interacting with one another, affecting one another, and together form a belief system. While I often accept these constructs as inherent truths, others believe that these ‘promises’ are human-made and can change over time as how certain belief systems has morphed over the years. ‘Neither left nor right, either end pleases’ is a response of bi-cultural sense of pride and a desire of hold on to that heritage.
